He represented the ADA 9th District (Michigan and Wisconsin) as a member of the American Dental Association Council on Communications and is a former president of the American Association of Dental Editors and Journalists. Dr. Maihofer is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, and a Fellow of the Michigan Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He authored of the well-known “Peer Review/Ethics” column in the MDA Journal as well as a compendium of those columns, Most-Asked Ethics Questions, published in 2019.

Myofascial pain is a common source of musculoskeletal pain affecting the jaws and neck. It can lead to chronic, debilitating pain that also manifests as unexplained tooth pain, earaches, and headaches. About the Speaker … Dr. Seena Patel currently serves as the Associate Director of Oral Medicine and Assistant Professor at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health at A.T. Still University. She is also an associate at Southwest Orofacial Group in Phoenix, Arizona, limiting her practice to orofacial pain, oral medicine, and dental sleep medicine since 2012. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and the American Board of Oral Medicine. Dr. Patel simultaneously earned her dental and master’s in public health degrees from the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health in 2010 and completed her residency in both orofacial pain and oral medicine at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California in 2012. Her educational interests are in myofascial pain, neuropathic pain, oral mucosal diseases, management of obstructive sleep apnea with mandibular advancement devices, and the dental management of medically complex patients. New Controlled Substance License Requirement

Caring for Patients in Pain

If a patient is experiencing pain on one side of the face, it may be caused by a temporomandibular disorder. This is especially true if it involves the patient’s chewing muscles. TMDs are part of a group of disabling conditions that are characterized by dysfunctions in the jaw muscles and/or the temporomandibular joint. To add to that, chronic orofacial pain is also a typical feature of TMD. Muscles of the face can also cause unexplained toothaches that lead to unnecessary dental treatment.

This is where dentistry comes into play. These conditions are often misdiagnosed or overlooked, but as a dentist you can step in and provide the guidance, diagnosis, and resources your patients need to live pain-free or with minimal discomfort. As a dentist, you can successfully treat patients’ pain, but it is important to properly understand TMDs, what to look for, and how to provide treatment, such as with oral appliance therapy.

About the speaker … Dr. Mayoor Patel received his dental degree from the University of Tennessee in 1994 and then went on to complete a one-year residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry. Additionally, Dr. Patel served as an adjunct clinical instructor at the Craniofacial Pain Center at Tufts Dental School from 2011-2014 and presently again.
