Mission of Mercy Serves Nearly 1,000 Patients;
Provides Nearly $1 Million in Care

The 2016 MDA Foundation Michigan Mission of Mercy served 968 patients and provided nearly $1 million worth of dental care, to disadvantaged individuals — another example of dentistry's commitment to access-to-care. The MOM took place June 10 and 11 on the campus of Macomb Community College in Warren.

Of the 968 patients, 281 returned for additional treatment, with a total of 1,249 patient visits overall.

“Our member dentists, dental team members, and other volunteers worked their hearts out to help hundreds of people get access to dental services,” said MDA CEO/Executive Director Karen Burgess.

“In addition to the care provided on site, we were successful in sending our message that dental health is important and that the dental community is committed to access for all,” Burgess said.

The MOM garnered media coverage from print, radio and TV. Even more impactful, there were seven legislative visits. Rep. Henry Yanez, Rep. Laura Cox, Rep. Tom Leonard, Sen. Dave Knezek, Sen. Steve Bieda and staff members for Sen. Marty Knollenberg. Matt Lori, from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, also toured the MOM and heard the MDA message.

Thanks go to the Michigan Dental Association Foundation, the Michigan Mission of Mercy committee, and the hundreds of dentists, dental team members, and other volunteers who made this year’s MOM a reality. Full MOM details and coverage appeared in the August MDA Journal.
