Members are asking about the new Medication Access and Training Expansion Act, which created a new one-time training requirement for any provider who is applying for or renewing his or her Drug Enforcement Administration registration. An active DEA registration is required for any provider who prescribes controlled substances.
The requirement applies to providers who will be initially applying for or renewing their DEA registration on or after June 27, 2023. The requirement does not apply to a dentist who graduated from a dental school in the United States on or after June 27, 2018, and who has successfully completed a curriculum with eight hours of training.
To assist members, the ADA has issued a Frequently Asked Questions document to inform dentists of their responsibility under the new law, including training requirements. The ADA will also provide free options to satisfy those requirements. The FAQ document includes a letter from the DEA, which was sent to all providers in March. To access the ADA document, visit michigandental.org/MATE-Act.
Members are urged to review the FAQ document and email the ADA Member Service Center or call 312-440-2500 with questions or concerns.
