Hard Work, Inspiration Pave the Path to a Career

Megan Hopp is originally from Rogers City and will be graduating from Delta College in Bay City with a degree in dental assisting.

Because she always loved the dental profession and helping people, a career in dental assisting was a perfect match. As a child she was never afraid to go to the dentist. In fact, it was the complete opposite – she loved it! She loved the smell, the noise, and the equipment. Every time Hopp would see the dentist, she could picture herself one day working in the operatory. She actually enjoyed helping her little brother with very loose teeth and would help coax them out.

With the encouragement of her parents who have inspired and instilled the discipline of hard work, trying her best, and never giving up on her dreams, Hopp was able to persevere. She credits her pediatric dentist as being a large influence in her career choice.

“He saw that I was interested in the dental profession and he would explain procedures to me, and even let her watch while he was working on my little brother’s mouth,” Hopp explained.

Once enrolled at Delta College, the instructors were always allowing Hopp to grow, reach and expand her talents. “I have learned that I am actually a natural leader and that I am able of so much more than I thought, the right motivation and spark can ignite my dreams and they can come true,” she said.

The advice Hopp would give others thinking about pursuing a career in dentistry is that it will not easy, but it will be fun.

“You must work hard and earn good grades in order to succeed,” she explained. “Never think about the easy way out of things, but instead look for the best way and always do your best work no matter the circumstance. Also you are never in an office by yourself so lend a helping hand when it is needed and things will go much smoother.”

Hopp said winning the Michigan Dental Association Foundation Scholarship has helped her pay for her last semester of school. Hopp said her fear was to come this far, with the finish line in sight, only to be prevented from crossing it.

“So thank you so very much, “she said, “you made it possible for me to finish my goal.“
