Implicit bias refers to attitudes and stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions and decisions in an unconscious way, making them difficult to control. This course will address strategies for eliminating the interpersonal and workplace impact of bias, and will also help attendees understand how to enact those strategies corporately throughout their employment sector.
- Recognize and understand how bias impacts perception, judgment, and actions that may result in inequitable decision making, failure to effectively communicate, and could result in barriers to healthy interpersonal relationships and workplace productivity.
- Strategies to remedy the negative impact of implicit bias.
- Equitable access, approaches to reduce disparities in the access and delivery of health care services.
- Assessment of personal bias (post-test).
The state of Michigan issued a requirement for all health care providers to attend continuing education courses addressing the topic of “implicit biases.” This course responds to this requirement.
This course counts toward the Certified Dental Business Professional program.

About the Speaker … Dorinda Carter Andrews is a nationally recognized scholar of race, culture, and equity in educational contexts. She is currently the chair of the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University. Dr. Carter Andrews regularly consults with school districts, universities, municipalities, and civic organizations on how to develop and maintain culturally inclusive and equitable learning and work environments. She is a former industrial engineer, high school math teacher, and kindergarten teacher and has over 20 years of experience in higher education. She she holds degrees from Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt University, and Harvard University.
