Implicit Bias Training (Part I)

Implicit biases are unconscious attitudes and stereotypes that can manifest in the criminal justice system, workplace, school setting, and in the health care system. Individuals harbor implicit biases based on a number of different social categories, including race, gender, and sexuality. These biases often arise as a result of trying to find patterns and navigate the overwhelming stimuli in this very complicated world. Culture, media, and upbringing are some factors that contribute to the development of such biases.

Learning objectives:

  • Assessment of personal biases (pre-test)
  • The historical basis and present consequences of implicit biases based on an individual’s characteristics.
  • Discussion of current research on implicit bias in the access to and delivery of healthcare services.
  • Serving a diverse population, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and cultural sensitivity.

The state of Michigan issued a requirement for all health care providers to attend continuing education courses addressing the topic of “implicit biases.” This course responds to this requirement.

This course counts toward the Certified Dental Business Professional program.
