Depression, Disability, and Dentistry (a.m.) and Triumph Over Tumultuous Times (p.m.)

NOTE: Breakfast and lunch provided.

Morning Session: Team members in conflict, patients in emotional turmoil, riots in the streets, fires in the West, and a worldwide attack by a killer virus can cause significant complications to the practice of dentistry. Learn how to overcome the emotional side of disaster, build trust, prevent dilemmas, manage conflict, and train your brain to overcome pain.

Afternoon Session: The afternoon seminar is designed to give attendees practical tools to prepare and cope with life’s interruptions and its end. We all die. Let’s prepare for it! Understand the difficult decisions faced at the end of life (whether you want to be resuscitated, ventilated, or enter hospice care) and the need to communicate your wishes to your caregivers before you are unable to do so. The importance of having a will, delegating beneficiaries, dividing family heirlooms, and assigning power of attorney will all be covered.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognize the physical effects of pain and grief and the neuroscience behind it.
  • Understand the psychological needs of patients and team members who are suffering and learn what to say (or not say) to them.
  • Prepare for the worst by purchasing appropriate disability insurance and developing a life and lifestyle that functions well, outside of dentistry.

Co-sponsored by MDA Insurance, MDA Services, Advantage Technologies, Crest Oral B Professional Oral Health, Exacta Dental Direct, Garfield Refining, and Sodium Dental.

About the Speaker … With 30 years in clinical dentistry, 21 years as a national spokesperson for the American Dental Association (including president of the Minnesota Dental Association) Kimberly Harms seeks to support those facing grief, trauma and conflict by sharing that accumulated knowledge with seminar attendees.
