This session will explore the issues of pain, addiction, and pain treatment. The opioid epidemic has touched each of our practices and many of our lives and has become a leading cause of death for those under the age of 55. Beginning with the causes and the scope of the opioid epidemic this session will continue with an explanation of both acute and chronic pain and conclude with best practices and office policies for treatment of dental pain.

At the end of this course, attendees will have a better understanding of pain, opioids, and the effective treatments of pain that maximize pain relief while reducing the risk of drug abuse and addiction.

About the speaker … Dr. Don Teater is a family physician who has lived and worked in western North Carolina since 1988. In 2004 he started a clinic to treat those addicted to opioids in his primary care practice. From 2013 to mid-2016, he worked as medical adviser at the National Safety Council addressing the national epidemic of opioid abuse, addiction, and overdose. Dr. Teater was lead facilitator for the expert panel discussion during the development of the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain — United States, 2016. Dr. Teater has also served on the World Health Organization Committee that met in December 2015 to address drugged driving. Since June 2016, Teater has worked for Teater Health Solutions to concentrate on educating prescribers and others on the science of opioids and how that should influence treatment and policy decisions. Currently he contracts with the Centers for Disease Control on the academic detailing of prescribers to educate them on the appropriate use of opioids for the treatment of pain. Financial Systems Training for Front Office Personnel

Speaker: William van Dyk, DDS
Fee: $25
CE Credits: 1

Participants of this webinar will learn that the flow of money through a dental practice involves much more than handling a spreadsheet or depositing money in the bank at the end of the day. Someone involved with finances must coordinate (sometimes even help develop) the financial policies of the practice. He or she must be able to instruct the whole team — including the dentist — in the importance of their role in the financial health of the practice. He or she must have an understanding of the dental treatment for each patient, the role of insurance in their treatment, the priority of the care, and the time necessary to complete the treatment. Finally the financial coordinator must be aware of the ongoing financial connection of patients to the office. This course will give that person the tools to be successful in a dental practice.

At the end of this webinar, the financial coordinator should be able to:

  • Lead a discussion on importance of a comprehensive written financial policy for the practice.
  • Help the whole office develop and understand the fees of the practice.
  • Recognize the various important steps in communicating finances to the patient and following up on their commitment.
  • Instruct each member of the dental team on their roles in successful financial communication with patients and fellow team members.

This webinar counts toward the Dental Business Professional Certification.

About the speaker … Dr. William van Dyk has been speaking to dental audiences since 1985. As part of the ADA Success Seminar team, he brought practice management programs to junior and senior dental students in nearly half the dental schools in the country. Later he helped develop the Advantage Program, which has been offered to new dentists to help transition them into dental practice ownership. Dr. van Dyk has spoken at dozens of dental meetings throughout the United States including the Hinman, Chicago Midwinter, and the ADA Annual Session on topics that include dental esthetics, building patient loyalty, crisis management, and team building. Underlying all of his presentations is the assumption that practice success is based on a close bond with patients. Using information gleaned from other successful businesses, he ties the activities of the office and the various team members to the goal of understanding and satisfying the needs and wants of the patient.
