The MDA holds three scientific sessions throughout the year: Summer Scientific Session, Winter Scientific Session and Spring Scientific Session. Each event combines weekend fun with great continuing education courses for dentists and staff alike.

Summer Scientific Session

Friday Course

My Jaw Hurts! What Do I Do?
An Overview of Orofacial Pain Disorders, Diagnosis and Management (Part I)

This is a two-day course on orofacial pain disorders, primarily focused on the temporomandibular disorders. It will review arthrogenous disorders, myogenous disorders, internal derangements, as well as other uncommon joint conditions. The goal is to understand pain mechanisms and dysfunction in the orofacial structures, thereby allowing dentists to make appropriate diagnoses and to treat accordingly. The first day of the course will cover the etiology, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of orofacial pain disorder. The second day will review diagnostic procedures, examination methods, and management strategies. Management involves a multidisciplinary approach. Dentists will learn how to implement medical, dental, pharmacologic, and behavioral treatments. Clinical case studies will be presented to illustrate the treatment of orofacial pain conditions.

Course objectives:

  • How to recognize patients with orofacial pain and dysfunction, including temporomandibular joint disorders, and treat uncomplicated conditions.
  • The underlying pain mechanisms and dysfunction of the orofacial structures.
  • How to perform a comprehensive head and neck examination and oral diagnostic evaluation.
  • How to make common orofacial pain diagnoses.
  • How to manage orofacial pain through non-pharmacological methods, including splint therapy, interventional therapy, and physical medicine.
  • How to select, administer and prescribe pharmacological agents in the treatment of orofacial pain disorders.

About the speaker ... Dr. Seena Patel currently serves as the associate director of oral medicine and assistant professor at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health at A.T. Still University. She is also an associate at the Southwest Orofacial Group in Phoenix, Ariz., practicing orofacial pain, oral medicine and dental sleep medicine since 2012.

Accommodations

We have reserved a block of guest rooms at the Bavarian Inn Lodge. The rate is $139 — standard double room, $149 — premium double or king room and $199 — suite. Single, Double, Triple and Quad occupancy per room, per night. There is an additional $15 charge per night for fifth or sixth person in the same room. Rollaway bed charges are $15 per night and cribs are $5 per night. Reservations can be made by calling the Bavarian Inn Lodge at 855-652-7200; mention the MDA Code 12E4P2.

Reservations must be made by July 3, 2017, to obtain the MDA rate.

Cancellation/Refund Policy

A 72-hour notice of cancellation is required for all CE programs. Refunds will be granted upon written request, less a $25 administration fee. An email is an acceptable notification.

This course is designed to enhance the general practitioners understanding of the future trends of endodontic therapy including:

  • a comparison between traditional 2-D imaging and 3-D imaging — complex canal systems simplified with 3-D imaging;
  • understanding the various patterns of cracked teeth and the treatment associated with them — evaluations of symptoms related to cracked teeth to aid in diagnosis;
