Office of the Inspector General:
Fraud, Waste and Abuse Prevention Requirements

NOTE: This Office of the Inspector General seminar is intended to educate dentists, compliance officers, and billing managers on the elements of a written Fraud, Waste and Abuse compliance program. It does NOT meet the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services compliance requirements (see below).

This 90-minute course will provide participants with an understanding of the requirements from the Office of the Inspector General regarding written policies, training, and documentation for compliance. This seminar will provide an outline of what should be included in an effective FWA compliance program. Attendees will then be able to construct a written compliance program for FWA after attending this seminar. This course would be beneficial for a practice’s compliance officer, billing manager, and/or owner/dentist(s).

Written policies preventing fraud, waste, and abuse are mandatory for all Medicare/Medicaidparticipating dental practices. This includes practices participating in Delta Dental’s Healthy Kids program, which is a Medicaid initiative.

CMS Compliance Information

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requires that all Medicare/Medicaid providers and their staff (including those that participate in Delta Dental’s Healthy Kids program) take the CMS training for Fraud, Waste and Abuse Prevention and General Compliance. This training can be taken directly on the CMS website through the Medicare Learning Network. or through Delta Dental, which provides the same exact training module. CMS mandates that its content not be modified.

In addition to Fraud, Waste and Abuse and General Compliance Training, Section 6401 of the Affordable Care Act requires that a “provider of medical or other items or services or supplier within a particular industry sector or category” shall establish a compliance program as a condition of enrollment in Medicare, Medicaid, or the Children’s Health Insurance Program. The OIG offers guidance for creating your own written compliance program.
