This is a two-part course on orofacial pain disorders, primarily focused on the temporomandibular disorders. The first day of the course will cover the etiology, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of orofacial pain disorder. The second day will review diagnostic procedures, examination methods, and management strategies. Management involves a multidisciplinary approach. Dentists will learn how to implement medical, dental, pharmacologic, and behavioral treatments. Clinical case studies will be presented to illustrate the treatment of orofacial pain conditions.

Course objectives:

  • How to recognize patients with orofacial pain and dysfunction, including temporomandibular joint disorders, and treat uncomplicated conditions.
  • The underlying pain mechanisms and dysfunction of the orofacial structures.
  • How to perform a comprehensive head and neck examination and oral diagnostic evaluation.
  • How to make common orofacial pain diagnoses.
  • How to manage orofacial pain through non-pharmacological methods, including splint therapy, interventional therapy, and physical medicine.
